However, it has a high nitrogen content, which can scorch the blades of grass and stunt the growth of roots. For this reason, it is best used for newly-laid sod and established lawns. For best results, mix the fertilizer with water and apply it to the lawn. Spread it around the perimeter of the lawn, and overlap the granules with six to 12 inches.
